Almost Autumn

The days become shorter again. After a not so good summer, we have a not so bad after-summer. This weekend it was extraordinary good weather. Good enough for a walk in the woods. Well, a small green piece of land in the south-west of the Netherlands near Hellevoetsluis. The place is called Quackjeswater. More photo’s in a Web Album

Does it always rain in Spain?

It looks like it. During a short trip, more than half of the time it was raining. That does not mean we had a bad time. Oh no, not at all. Rain also has some sort of beauty.

Antwerp

Antwerp is one of the bigger cities in Belgium. I had the opportunity to stay there for a week, while following a course for my work. It is a city with big contrast, and a lot of the town is undergoing reconstruction. Nevertheless some very nice old places do exist which any photographer should visit. Especially the train station and the old ZOO must not be missed.

Spain and Portugal just after the winter

Since my daughter lives in Spain we have a good excuse to visit this country every now and then. This time we went in February, and I can tell you it was cold, wet and windy. Luckily we have also enjoyed a few warmer days and were able to visit nice places in Portugal like Braga and Guimaraes. If you walk such towns it is as if time stood still. But also contrast; Amazing beauty and incomprehensible rubbish live next to each other. I’ll show you some of the beauty;

Road Closed

We are living in a dead-end street, meaning only one way in or out. Not a real problem, as the way out connects to a major road allowing us to go in any direction. However, if that connection would be closed, then you may take a long side-tour through the polder. And that is what they just did! For good reasons ofcourse, but it means we are more or less confined this weekend. To get an idea what is happening I shot a few pictures. Don’t you like the bright colors of the traffic cones?

Fairytale sculptures in Scheveningen

On a beautiful sunny-day we went to the beach of Scheveningen with the photo hobby club to shoot some themed images. While walking its boulevard, you pass a large outdoor terrace with fairytale sculptures. These belong to the “Beelden aan Zee museum” and there are twenty-three sculptures, all created by Tom Otterness. They are so cute and photographed a lot. Here’s my take on it.

Fabric Market

A fabric market gives you a lot of opportunities to shoot marvelous patterns and colors. These photo’s were taken while my wife was combing the paths for some new cloth. The market was held in Gouda, a Dutch city famous for it’s city hall. More photographs are in the gallery.

Maeslantkering

The Maeslantkering is a huge storm surge barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg, which is a waterway located in the Netherlands, close to Hoek van Holland. The barrier automatically closes when needed. It is part of the Dutch Delta Works and known to be one of largest moving structures on Earth. If you wan to know more about this wonder of engineering then visit the website of Het Keringhuis. Visiting Blijdorp ZOO Rotterdam

The ZOO in Rotterdam is continuously changing. Whenever I go there (about 3-4 times each year) I can shoot images of new and changed things. The Prairie Dog (1st image), is supposedly the father of some 25 puppies. The zoo-keepers catch-away many of those youngsters, otherwise it becomes too crowded. The Racoon (2nd image) has moved to a new tree-house. The red Ibis (on the 4th image) is one from a larger group which are new to Blijdorp. More images are posted in the gallery.

Visiting ZOO Emmen

The ZOO in Emmen is famous for its butterfly-garden. I found it a bit disappointing. Yet we had a fantastic day, and especially the monkeys were lively and did a nice acrobatic performance. Another worthwhile mention are the elephants. There’s quite a big group of animals, and they were marching like in a parade. Follow this link for the complete photalbum.
