Weather Station

Since November 2006, my LaCrosse WS-2308 weather station is up and running. It is continuously collecting data and every 300 seconds this data is uploaded to a number of services (Weather underground, CWOP and AWEKAS). On the picture you see the three connected sensors; a rain gauge, a wind sensor and combined thermometer/hygrometer. The wind sensor was recently replaced, since it proved unreliable and often caused errors on the console. The new sensor has cups instead of a small fan, which is also more accurate in measuring the wind direction. Real Time Station readings are being collected, buffered and send to different weather services each five minutes.

WUHU software

To automate the processing of the sensor data and the upload process, the station is connected to the server using a serial cable. Special software is needed to read the sensor data directly from the stations buffer. I am using some amazing software for this which is called WUHU. This is short for ‘Weather Underground /Heavy Weather Uploader’. And that is what it also does; taking care of uploading the data to various weather services. You can find more information in the Yahoo WUHU group or alternatively at the website of the author (H. Smith).

The weather station is located in out garden and it’s exact coordinates are given below. Since this is in the western part of the Netherlands the actual ‘height’ is below sea-level. The value was taken from the Actual Height model of the Netherlands (called AHN)
